Land set aside and conserved for public
enjoyment. The first was Yellowstone National
Park, USA, established 1872. National parks
include not only the most scenic places, but
also places distinguished for their historic,
prehistoric, or scientific interest, or for
their superior recreational assets. In
England and Wales under the National Park Act
1949 the Peak District, Lake District,
Snowdonia, and other areas of natural beauty
were designated as national parks. Port
Hacking, New South Wales, near Sydney, is
Australia's chief national park. Of the 30
national parks in Canada, the most notable is
Jasper, in the Rockies. The Kruger and Natal
national parks were pioneer African examples.
An innovation to preserve the national
environment is the reservation of wilderness
areas, with no motorized traffic, no
overflying aircraft, no hotels, hostels,
shops or cafes, no industry, and the minimum
of management.
